Kossuth County hog confinement fined by DNR

BURT — A Kossuth County hog confinement operation is facing thousands of dollars of penalties from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources over late materials management plan update and compliance fee submissions.

According to an administrative consent order from the DNR, North Iowa Custom Finishing Inc., of Bode, did not submit its MMP update and compliance fees for one of its three facilities in Kossuth County for 2020 until more than two months after its due date of April 1, 2020.

The North Iowa 3 site is located at 2609 175th Ave. outside of Burt and is a 4,400-head swine confinement operation. The annual compliance fee is $264.

In 2020, the MMP update and fees were not submitted until June 4.

North Iowa 3 was already cited by the DNR for late MMP updates and fees in 2016 and 2017. For those violations, the DNR issued a penalty of $4,500, with payments to be made in two parts. North Iowa 3 paid the first payment of $2,250 on March 1, 2019, but never submitted the second payment of $2,250 that was due on March 1, 2020.

In a new order from the DNR, North Iowa is required to pay the remaining $2,250 penalty from 2019, as well as an additional $4,100 administrative penalty for the 2020 violations. The company must pay these penalties within 60 days of receiving the administrative order, which was signed on April 8.
