Waterloo man leads ISP on pursuit

Car crashes in rural Hamilton County

ELLSWORTH — Two Waterloo teens were injured in a single-vehicle crash in rural Hamilton County after leading Iowa State Patrol troopers on a high-speed pursuit on Saturday night.

According to Iowa State Patrol Trooper Ben Miller, Khalil Justin Crawley, 18, of Waterloo, was driving a 2013 Volkswagen car northbound on Interstate 35 when another trooper attempted to pull him over for going 92 miles per hour. Crawley attempted to flee, taking off at a high speed, exiting eastbound onto U.S. Highway 20 before he turned southbound on County Road R77.

Crawley lost control of the vehicle at the intersection of R77 and County Road D41, with the vehicle entering the east ditch and rolling several times.

Crawley was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was taken by ambulance to Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames to be treated for minor injuries.

A 16-year-old female passenger in Crawley’s vehicle, also of Waterloo, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines by MercyOne Aircare. Miller did not have an update on the status of the passenger’s injuries on Monday afternoon.

The pursuit and crash remain under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol and Miller said charges are expected to be filed at the conclusion of the investigation.

Miller said it is not yet clear why Crawley attempted to flee the initial traffic stop.

The ISP was assisted by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Jewell/Ellsworth Police Department and Ellsworth ambulance.
