Karlee Ihde, a 20-year-old student at Iowa Central Community College, grew up in West Union shooting pictures to submit for county and state fairs.

“I loved seeing the reactions,” said Ihde, who was involved in Future Farmers of America.

Ihde and a group of photography students at Iowa Central will be teaching a workshop centered around the basics of photography. The workshop is a collaboration between the college and the Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association. It will be held on Jan. 20, 27 and Feb. 3, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at 921 Central Ave., the home of FDFAA. The workshop is available to anyone 16 and older.

Idhe will teach about basic camera settings, formatting cards, auto focus and the importance of printing. She will also explain shutter speed and how to use it to benefit the photographer.

Evelin Bonilla, 25, of Fort Dodge, said she grew up around cameras.

“My family has always been about taking pictures for any event, like a birthday,” Bonilla said. “There has always been a camera at my house.”

Bonilla will talk about the investment in time and money that photography takes. Later, she will talk about lighting and taking photos on a regular basis.

Bethany Rice, 21, of Humboldt, became a photography student because she wanted to become more active.

“I first started out in graphic design, but I didn’t want to be in front of a computer all the time,” she said. “So I thought, ‘why not photography?'”

Rice will talk about the best and most affordable software for better pictures. She will also work on projects with participants relating to shutter speed.

Hannah Taylor, 20, of Schaller, first started taking pictures on her cell phone. The hobby grew from there.

“I started by learning to take images on a cell phone,” Taylor said. “I liked sharing my photographs and wanted to make a career out of it.”

Taylor will talk about shutter priority and manual mode.

She will also teach about ISO and what the benefits and cons are.

Rochelle Green, photography program coordinator at Iowa Central, said there will also be a website available for participants to view outside of class.

“We will have a student preparing a website for the class to view outside of the class time,” Green said. “This website will include videos, tips and tricks, photo challenges and tutorials.”

The workshop is non credit.

Money raised from the workshop will be shared between the Iowa Central photography program and the FDFAA.

Shelly Bottorff, executive director of Fort Dodge Fine Arts, said she’s thrilled to help provide the opportunities for students and the community to learn more about photography.

“I am excited to be able to collaborate with Rochelle and her students,” Bottorff said. “The FDFAA is all about collaboration, working together and helping to provide, support and celebrate art and cultural opportunities in our community. I am hopeful that we will be able to continue to offer this type of programming. Wouldn’t it be fun to hold a class in Phillips auditorium? We’re getting close.”
