Fort Dodge man arrested after chase

Marshall faces several charges, including eluding police

A Fort Dodge man was arrested on three charges Sunday night after leading police on a low-speed, but reckless chase through the city in a 2002 Ford Taurus.

The chase began after Fort Dodge Police initiated a traffic stop on Understanding B. Marshall, 37, after police said he was driving without his headlights on in the 900 block of First Avenue North around 8:24 p.m.

Police say that the defendant, while speeding and traveling too fast for road conditions, at one point lost control of his vehicle, taking out a street sign in the 400 block of North 13th Street before running a stop sign at the intersection of Fifth Avenue North and North 11th Street.

The vehicle spun out of control toward the end of the chase, placing the driver and two passengers in danger, which police say earned a reckless driving charge. He traveled 38 mph in a 25 mph zone at one point before losing control of his vehicle at the intersection of Fifth Avenue North and North 10th Street, sliding off the road.

Police found Marshall on foot, hiding in the 900 block of Fifth Avenue North after bailing from the crashed Taurus. Passengers identified him.

Marshall is charged with:

• Eluding, second or subsequent violation, an aggravated misdemeanor.

• Speeding.

• Driving under suspension.

• Reckless driving.

• Failure to use headlamps when required.

• Failure to obey a traffic control device.

The defendant is being held in the Webster County Jail on a $2,000 cash bond. A preliminary hearing for the eluding charge is scheduled for Jan. 14.

The other traffic charges, simple misdemeanors, have been continued 180 days.
