Sewer rate increase advances

First increase would go into effect Jan. 1

Fort Dodge residents would see their monthly sewer bills go up beginning next year under a plan that won the initial approval of the City Council Monday.

The first increase would take effect Jan. 1, 2021. It would mean homeowners would pay a minimum of $17.80 a month plus $3.44 for every 1,000 gallons above 3,000 gallons.

The second increase would take effect Jan. 1, 2022. It would result in a minimum monthly bill for homeowners of $18.33 plus $3.54 for every 1,000 gallons above 3,000 gallons.

“I think it’s a good idea to continue with gradual increases rather than hitting everyone with a big increase all at once,” Councilman Terry Moehnke said.

The first reading of the rate increases was approved by the council unanimously. It must be approved two more times to go into effect.
