Pigs perish in blaze near Moorland

MOORLAND — Two farm buildings and about 40 show hogs were lost in a wind-whipped blaze south of Moorland Friday afternoon.

“The wind played a huge factor in the fire spread,” Moorland Fire Chief Ken Thompson said.

No one was hurt in the fire at 1787 250th St. The fire was reported at 12:08 p.m.

Thompson said the fire started in a hog barn, then spread to a farrowing house about 10 to 15 feet away.

“Both of them will probably be a total loss,” he said.

A fleet of tanker trucks shuttled water to the scene from Moorland, about two miles away.

Firefighters returned to the scene at about 4:15 p.m. when the farrowing house reignited.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Online records of the Webster County Assessor’s Office list the property owners as Jason and Tiffany Woodruff.

Firefighters from Moorland, Otho, Gowrie, Callender, Barnum and Harcourt responded. Webster County sheriff’s deputies were also on scene.
