Sign rules, sewer project come before Fort Dodge council

A Fort Dodge businessman urged the City Council on Monday to take a fresh look at the regulations governing temporary signs.

Jerrod and Jessica Frideres own One Of A Kind Signs, which offers large black signs on which letters can be placed to advertise businesses and events.

The city has rules on such signs that, among other things, limit how long they can be in place at certain locations.

“I just would like it to be looked at,” Jerrod Frideres said.

Jerrod Frideres told the council that the city has become more aggressive in enforcing those rules.

“This is taking away their right to advertise on their own property,” he said.

City Manager David Fierke disagreed with the assertion that the city has become more aggressive in enforcing the rules.

Mayor Matt Bemrich said the council could take no action on the sign ordinance Monday. He suggested getting a report from the city planning staff and having a council workshop on the issue, perhaps as early as next month.

Bemrich added that he could see some value in providing exceptions to the rules for signs advertising flu shot clinics and COVID-19 testing sites.

In other business Monday, the council awarded a contract for the construction of a new sanitary sewer line along Williams Drive.

S.M. Hentges & Sons Inc., of Jordan, Minnesota, was hired to do the job at a cost of $1,541,332.51.
