FD will host local Black voter day

Black voters who may have questions or need help registering to vote will have the opportunity to get their questions answered today at H.C. Meriwether Park, located at 10th Avenue Southwest between Eighth and Ninth streets in Pleasant Valley

Volunteers will be gathered at the park in face coverings to greet potential voters who have questions, according to Sherry Washington, president of the Pleasant Valley Awareness Committee.

The event will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Second Baptist Church is hosting the event locally. Similar events are being held throughout the country on a day that’s called National Black Voter Day — launched by BET along with the National Urban League and other organizations.

“It’s the very first time that it’s happening,” Washington said. “The focus of the voter day is reach out to African Americans to see if they are registered and have absentee forms. It’s to meet people where they are.”

Washington said residents are invited to drive their car up to the park and will be met by a volunteer.

“We are asking people to pull up a car and we will be out there and go to the curb to get them any information they need,” Washington said.

Washington said not every city is participating.

“The importance of this day for Fort Dodge is not every city was asked to participate, but Fort Dodge was, so that was an honor for us to take part in this national day,” Washington said.

Washington said the event is non-partisan.

“Meriwether will be non-partisan,” she said. “We are just there to give information. That’s what’s important. Letting people know their vote is a voice.”

If it rains, the event will be moved to Second Baptist Church, 1827 Fourth Ave. S.
