DCI identifies subjects in officer-involved shooting

Deputy placed on leave during investigation

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has identified the subjects involved in the officer-involved shooting just south of Fort Dodge on Tuesday.

Melissa Halda, 39, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, was identified as the deceased woman. An autopsy was completed on Halda by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner.

Webster County Sheriff’s Deputy Brett Knippel fired the weapon that killed Halda.

The Fort Dodge Police Department and the Webster County Sheriff’s Office were called to 1518 20th Ave. S. shortly after 7 p.m. for a report of a suicidal female with two knives.

According to neighbor Joe Echelberger, Halda ran at Knippel armed with a knife in each hand. That was when Knippel fired at her. Halda died at the scene.

Knippel has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation per Webster County policy, which is the policy anytime there is an officer-involved shooting.
