Webster Co. Fair continues, despite major cancelations

Despite the cancelation of 4-H and FFA portions of the fair announced Monday by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, many parts of the Webster County Fair’s entertainment line-up will continue as scheduled.

The Webster County Fair Board has not canceled anything further since the Extension’s announcement, said President Cory Krug. The last alterations to the fair were made in early June, when the board announced some vendors, exhibits, free entertainment and carnival rides will not be present this year due to COVID-19 concerns. But there’s still plenty to see.

Grandstand events, starting today, include:

• Figure 8 Racing on Wednesday.

• Endurocross Motorcycle Challenge on Thursday.

• Side by Side and Tough Truck Races on Friday, followed by fireworks.

• Open Truck and Semi-Pull on Saturday.

This year’s grandstand features more bleachers to allow patrons to social distance outdoors.

The free drive-in movie, featuring “Miracle,” will continue as planned at 9 p.m. today. Music from Saucy Jack will be featured Saturday at 9 p.m. Both events will happen on the North Lawn.

The Antique Tractor Club will be hosting a pork loin sandwich meal at 3 p.m. on Friday, followed by music from singer Robby Vee at 7 p.m. The Antique Tractor Pull will be on Saturday at 1 p.m.

But despite everything happening, the Fair Board regrets seeing so many iconic parts of the fair cut by necessity as the coronavirus continues to escalate in Webster County.

“It’s about the kids, that’s the worst part,” said Krug. “The kids can’t show off the work they’ve been putting in.”

Krug said the board is hoping for local turnout, even as COVID-19 is expected to dampen turnout from out-of-town visitors.
