To protect and serve

Luke Fleener sergeant, Webster County Sheriff’s Office

How long have you been in law enforcement?

I have 30 years of law enforcement experience.

What other law enforcement positions/departments have you served in?

I began my career as a part-time officer with the Dayton Police Department, spent three years with the Fort Dodge Police Department and two years with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.

What’s an interesting fact about you that some might not know?

I enjoy the western lifestyle, and our family is involved in rodeos, team roping and barrel racing, and I shoe my own horses.

What’s the most memorable incident you’ve responded to?

There have been many incidents that stand out in my career, both good and bad. None were more impactful on my life than the incident involving the death of my dear friend and teammate Jamie Buenting in 2013.

What’s the best part of your day?

I still enjoy going to work and doing one of the best jobs in law enforcement, being a criminal investigator working cases.

What gives you the most satisfaction in your job?

Working an investigation from start to finish and solving cases is extremely satisfying and adds closure to the victims of crimes.

What’s the toughest part about your job?

I learned early in my career that it is important to not bring work home with you when possible. It is important to have a strong family support system in place.
