Flare gun shooting suspect makes initial appearance

New details of attempted murder emerge

William Goddard Jr.

The Fort Dodge man charged in the flare gun shooting of another man Tuesday night made his initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court for attempted murder Thursday morning.

William Goddard Jr., 31, was arrested early Wednesday morning. He’s charged with attempted murder, a Class B felony, and going armed with intent, a Class D felony, in connection with the assault in the 500 block of South 15th Street.

The victim, a 52-year-old man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries after he was hit with at least two shots from the flare gun to the upper torso and face around 8:42 p.m. Tuesday.

After firing the shots and pushing the victim to the ground, police said the defendant struck the man, who was unable to defend himself, with a blunt object numerous times, causing lacerations. Criminal complaints said that Goddard then got in his car, backed it up and struck the victim before driving away.

Police initially noted that they believed the attack was an isolated incident between the two, but not a random act.

Goddard is being held in Webster County Jail on a $505,000 cash-only bond. The defendant had prior outstanding arrest warrants for second-degree theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.

His preliminary hearing has been set for July 31.
