Webster Co. COVID-19 cases just shy of 100

Buena Vista drops to second in nation as hot spot

Webster County gained four new COVID-19 cases since Friday, ending at 99 total by the end of Monday.

Hamilton County gained 11 during the same time, ending at 123 cases.

Wright County gained another 15, ending at 293.

Neighboring Buena Vista County lost its number one hot spot distinction in New York Times data, even as it spiked another 126 cases (8.5%) over the weekend — more than any of the counties near Webster County. With 1,593 cases, it now leads as second in the nation for fastest-growing infection rate after being beat out by Lee County, Arkansas.

Every one of the top 13 counties in Iowa by per capita COVID-19 infection rates is home to a meatpacking plant. The only other county in the state with a meatpacking plant, Allamakee County, ranked number 15.

Those top 13 counties accounted for nearly two-thirds of deaths in Iowa, with 422 of the state’s 658 so far. When removing urban Polk County, the remaining 12 mostly rural counties accounted for about 40% of the deaths in Iowa (260).

Buena Vista County’s death toll stands at six. Webster and Humboldt counties each have had one death. Wright County has not had any deaths yet.

Recovery numbers in local counties are:

• Webster: 69 (70% of total cases).

• Hamilton: 60 (48% of total cases).

• Wright: 108 (37% of total cases).

• Buena Vista: 352 (22% of total cases).
