Broken sewer main repaired

1.1 million gallons of sewage was released

A broken sewer main that released about 1.1 million gallons of wastewater west of Fort Dodge has been repaired, and water tests have revealed no serious pollution resulting from the incident.

The pipe, which carries sewage from the ag industrial park called Iowa’s Crossroads of Global Innovation to the Fort Dodge wastewater treatment plant, broke at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Repairs were completed by 1:30 p.m. Friday, according to Fort Dodge City Engineer Tony Trotter.

The wastewater went into a farm field and entered a drainage system that emptied into Lizard Creek.

Trotter said water tests conducted Friday showed “nothing remotely close to dangerous levels” of pollutants in Lizard Creek.

Tests conducted Thursday showed 10.9 parts per million of ammonia at the point where the field draiange system empties into Lizard Creek and 0.6 parts per million in the creek. Trotter said neither figure represents a hazard.

He said a section of the sewer main had a 12-foot long crack in its top. He said he thinks a combination of pressure on the pipe and vibrations caused it to crack.

He said when crews began digging into the ground to make repairs, they found big chunks of concrete on top of the pipe that had apparently been left there when the sewer main was installed 13 years ago.

“It is very unusual to see that much debris on top of a pipe,” he said.

Trotter added that there are vibrations in the pipe when pumps are turned on and off.

Rasch Construction Inc., of Fort Dodge, performed the repairs. Gudmonson Services, of Fort Dodge, had crews and vacuum trucks at the site to remove water from the trench where repairs were being made.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has been notified of the incidents. It is not yet known if the city will be fined because of the wastewater leak.
