Man gets 8 years for bar shooting

A Mason City man who shot a gun multiple times near a crowd at Kingz Lounge in June 2019 has been sentenced to eight years in prison on federal charges.

Michael Wayne Holton, 33, received the sentence Thursday after pleading guilty in January to possession of a firearm by a felon. He was previously convicted of bringing contraband into a correctional facility and several domestic abuse assaults.

On June 22, Holton grabbed a 9-millimeter Taurus handgun from another person before firing it numerous times at a large group of people gathered outside the bar on North Seventh Street. No injuries were sustained, though one car occupied by a driver was damaged.

Following the sentence, Holton must serve three years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

Holton was originally charged by the state with intimidation with a dangerious weapon, a Class C felony; going armed with intent, a Class D felony; dominion or control of a firearm by a felon, a Class D felony; and reckless use of firearm causing property damage, an aggravated misdemeanor.

The state charges were dismissed In October in deference to federal charges.
