Fort Dodge Fire Rescue and Fort Dodge Police Department personnel retrieve two of the four individuals who were trapped on the island beneath the Karl L. King Bridge on Sunday afternoon. The four individuals, who have been cited for trespassing, rappelled down from the bridge onto the island.

Four men are safe after they rappelled down from the Karl L. King Bridge Sunday evening, landing on the island in the Des Moines River below, where they were rescued by the Fort Dodge Fire Department.

Just before 6 p.m. on Sunday, Fort Dodge Fire Rescue was dispatched to assist four male subjects stranded on the island. Fire Rescue deployed its boat to retrieve the four individuals from the island and return them to shore near Sunkissed Meadows Disc Golf Course.

According to Fort Dodge Fire Rescue, upon returning to shore, the four were evaluated for any injuries and while one did sustain minor injuries, all four declined medical attention.

The four individuals, identified as James Bruski, of Minnesota, Jonathan Loveless, of Missouri, Robert James, of Iowa, and Andrew Loveless, of Iowa, received citations for trespassing, according to Sgt. Zach Stanley with the Fort Dodge Police Department.

“The way the (state) code reads is if they use any property other than for its intended use, so they rappelled over the bridge onto that island, so they used the bridge inappropriately, so they got trespass citations,” he explained.
