FD property tax rate may stay the same

Council to consider levies Monday

The Fort Dodge city government may avoid a property tax increase for the fifth year in a row.

To comply with a new state law, the City Council on Monday will act on a measure setting the maximum amount the city will seek from certain components of the multifaceted property tax levy.

The tax levy to be considered Monday is $16.10 per $1,000 of taxable value. That will not be the total tax levy, however.

There are a couple more levies to be figured out, but Jeff Nemmers, the city clerk and finance director, has some good news for property owners.

”We anticipate the FY 2021 total tax rate for the city to be the same or very close to the FY 2020 total tax rate of $20.42,” he wrote in a report to the council.

During the council’s business meeting that will begin at 6 p.m. Monday in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S., the elected officials will act on a resolution approving the total maximum property tax dollars to be derived from certain levies in the fiscal year that begins July 1.

The proposal before the council establishes these property tax rates:

• $8.10 for the general fund, which pays for police and fire protection, parks and recreation, the library, the Blanden Memorial Art Museum and many other government functions.

• $6.16 for employee benefits

• 62 cents to support the Webster County Emergency Management Agency

• 47 cents for property and liability insurance

• 35 cents to support Dodge Area Rapid Transit

• 27 cents to help balance the general fund

• 12 cents for Citizens Central

The total to be considered Monday doesn’t include the levies for debt service and supporting the Karl King Band.

A figure for the debt service levy hasn’t been discussed by the council yet. Currently, that levy is $4.59 cents per $1,000 of taxable value.

The levy for the band is now 6 cents per $1,000 of taxable value.

Whatever final levy is eventually set by the council will only be a portion of the property tax rate paid by Fort Dodge residents. The Fort Dodge Community School District, Webster County and Iowa Central Community College also levy property taxes.
