Suspect in vehicular homicide arrested

Prosecutors say Ismail violated terms of her pretrial release

A Fort Dodge woman wanted for violating her pretrial release terms on a vehicular homicide charge was arrested Tuesday, more than 18 months after an accident the Iowa State Patrol said happened while she was intoxicated.

Aisha Ismail, 25, faces one count of homicide by vehicle, a Class B felony, stemming from a July 2018 accident west of Badger on Webster County road C56 that killed David Fliehe, 20, of Humboldt.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Neil Morenz, the investigator of the crash, said that Ismail crashed her Land Rover head-on into a Plymouth Neon, killing the driver.

In his report, Morenz said Ismail was westbound on the road in a 2006 Land Rover. As she approached a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pulling a car trailer, she allegedly made an unsafe pass of the pick-up truck, leading to the head-on collision with Fliehe’s eastbound car in the opposite lane. Morenz’s investigation estimated that she was travelling about 70 miles per hour in a 55 zone as she made the pass.

Fliehe was pronounced dead at the scene; Ismail was airlifted to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines for serious injuries.

A warrant obtained for a urine sample from Ismail over seven hours after the crash found her blood alcohol concentration was .101, still well over the legal limit, according to the complaint.

The arrest comes shortly after a relative of the victim, James Fliehe, gained attention on social media for a post of Ismail’s photos pleading with the public to help find the defendant.

“She is the one that’s responsible for taking the life of David,” James Fliehe’s Facebook post said Sunday, asking anyone with knowledge of her whereabouts to contact the police. “We need help finding her and getting her turned in to the police so David can finally get justice.”

Ismail posted bond after her initial arrest in February 2019. A second warrant for her arrest was issued in October after prosecutors say she violated the terms of her pretrial release. Ismail forfeited a $25,000 bond as a result. Court documents do not detail the nature of the alleged violation.

The defendant’s trial in the case has been rescheduled to Feb. 18. A pretrial conference is scheduled for Feb. 10.
