The Fort Dodge City Council on Monday awarded a contract for a master plan to address the storm sewer system. JEO Consulting Group Inc., of Ankeny will update the maps of the storm sewer system, and identify needed improvements.

Buried beneath the streets and sidewalks of Fort Dodge is a network of storm sewers, some perhaps a century old, intended to carry away rainfall and snow melt.

That storm sewer system could likely use a little attention, and on Monday the Fort Dodge City Council approved a contract that will form the basis for future improvements.

The council hired JEO Consulting Group Inc., of Ankeny, to prepare a storm sewer master plan at a cost of $432,900.

The company will update the maps of the storm sewer system, and identify needed improvements. It will have about a year to submit its final report.

Also on Monday, the council hired McClure Engineering Co., of Fort Dodge, to prepare plans for updating water mains on the city’s northwest side. The company will be paid $280,000.

It will prepare plans for new water mains to be constructed in 2021.

In an unrelated matter, the council hired Riley-Armstrong Plumbing & Heating Inc., of Fort Dodge, to demolish a building at 111 S. Fifth St. at a cost of $17,219.26. The building, which once housed an automotive repair shop, is just west of the roundabout intersection of First Avenue South and Sixth Street. The city bought it about a year ago with the intention of demolishing it to create space near the roundabout for future development. The demolition is to be completed by the end of April.

Other bidders for the demolition were Mid Iowa Site Services, $17,866; Russ’s Construction, $18,178; Platinum Construction Inc., $26,580; Rasch Construction Inc., $35,712.50; Doyle Construction, $39,271; Clark Construction, $44,130; and JWS Construction, $50,225. All of the bidders are from Fort Dodge.

Also on Monday, the council:

• Purchased a house a 302 N. Eighth St., from Susana Valles, of Fort Dodge, for $44,000.

• Bought three Ford Explorers for the Police Department from Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota for $95,511.

• Hired Winger Contracting Co., of Fort Dodge, to install a new chiller at the Fort Dodge Public Library at cost of $93,058.
