Fort Dodge council ceremony set for Thursday

Election winners will take oath of office

The newly elected member of the Fort Dodge City Council and the four members who were re-elected will take their oath of office Thursday morning.

The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S.

The newly elected council member, Andy Fritz, is actually returning to the governing body. He served as an at-large member of the council from 2010 to 2017. In November, the voters of Ward 2 elected him to replace Councilman Dean Hill, who decided not to run again after serving eight years on the council.

The councilmen who were re-elected are Neven Conrad (at-large), Terry Moehnke (Ward 1), Dave Flattery (Ward 3) and Kim Alstott (Ward 4).

Following the ceremony, there will be a council business meeting in the Municipal Building.

During that session, the council is expected to act on a measure eliminating its committee system.

In 1982, the council set up a series of committees to study issues before they were to be presented to the full council. The committees are Boards and Commissions, Engineering and Streets, Leisure Time, Planning and Community Development, Public Safety, Utilities, and Ways and Means.

Each committee consists of three council members. They meet on an as-needed basis, but within the last decade, committee meetings have been replaced with workshop sessions attended by all seven council members.

Also during the meeting, the council will elect a mayor pro tem who will fill in for Mayor Matt Bemrich when he is absent. Flattery is the current mayor pro tem.

A dean of the council will also be selected. The dean of the council is traditionally the member who has the most seniority, but is not the mayor pro tem. That individual presides over council meetings if the mayor and mayor pro tem are both absent.
