DART bus fares, budget to remain steady

FD council continues look at spending plans

People who ride Dodger Area Rapid Transit buses won’t see a fare increase in the next fiscal year under a budget presented to the Fort Dodge City Council Monday.

The cost for a bus ride on one of the regular fixed routes will remain $1.50 for adults and $1 for children and senior citizens.

The total cost of running the DART bus system is about $1.1 million. The biggest single source of revenue are federal subsidies that total about 34 percent of the budget.

A city property tax levy provides $262,200 for the bus service. That amount will remain the same in the fiscal year that will begin July 1.

The service provided 113,939 rides in the 2019 fiscal year, according to Jay Kammerer, transit manager for MIDAS Council of Governments, which runs the bus system.

The council also received these proposed budgets:

• Municipal Building maintenance: $125,500, up from the current $116,000

• City manager and mayor: $98,900, up from $91,400

• City clerk’s office: $59,500, up from $55,500

• Information technology: $12,300, unchanged from the current budget

The elected officials did not make any changes to the budgets reviewed Monday.

Although the fiscal year begins July 1, state law requires cities to have their budgets completed by mid-March. The City Council has been reviewing proposed budgets every week since mid-December.
