Matthew Dominick, 40, of Humboldt, a Ward 1 councilman, is charged with operating while intoxicated — first offense, a serious misdemeanor; and failure to maintain control, a simple misdemeanor.

The crash was reported at 7:51 p.m. Thursday.

Humboldt police responded to the intersection of 13th Street Southwest and 10th Avenue Southwest.

According to police, Dominick was turning the vehicle east onto 10th Avenue Southwest from 13th Street Southwest when he struck a properly parked car.

The SUV Dominick was driving overturned before coming to rest on its top, police reported.

Dominick suffered minor injuries from the crash.

According to police, Dominick had been consuming alcohol. His blood alcohol content was .134, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. The legal limit in Iowa is .08.

The SUV, a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse, is owned by Altria Group Distribution, of Humboldt. The parked car, a 2009 Ford Fusion, is owned by Craig Orness, of Humboldt.

The SUV had about $20,000 in damage. The car sustained about $5,000 in damage.

Dominick was Humboldt’s last police chief. Dominick served as chief from April 2008 to December 2009. He was relieved of his duties following an investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation into alleged misuse of drivers license and/or criminal history information.

Humboldt County Sheriff Dean Kruger now oversees the city’s police force.

Dominick is being held in the Humboldt County Jail.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
