Teen arrested for posting school shooter ad

A 14-year-old boy accused of posting an online advertisement seeking a school shooter in Fort Dodge was arrested Monday afternoon, Fort Dodge police reported.

The boy, whose name is not being released due to his age, has been charged with threat of terrorism, according to police. He has been placed in the Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Facility in Eldora.

The ad was posted on Indeed.com Friday afternoon, according to police reports.

“This incident caused a significant disruption in student learning while also raising reasonable concerns for safety among students within the school district,” police Capt. Ryan Gruenberg said. “As with any potential threat, we continue to work closely with the schools to ensure those individuals are held responsible.”

The Police Department was notified of the online posting Friday. Investigators tried to apply for the job online in order to identify who placed the ad, but were directed to another web page that contained little content, according to police reports.

Investigators then contacted Indeed.com and were able to get information from the company that indicated the origin of the post. That, combined with other information, led police to the boy.

The boy was taken into custody, and his residence was searched to locate any potential evidence.

“We would like to thank everyone in the community who passed along information to us making us aware of the online posting,” Gruenberg said.

He said the Police Department worked closely with the Fort Dodge Community School District.

“With student safety being of utmost importance, we always are working in collaboration with the FDCSD any time a potential threat or concern is raised,” Gruenberg said. “This incident was no different. Once information was gathered, we worked closely with the school staff to identify the individual involved and hold them accountable. The Fort Dodge Police Department is committed to continuing these relationships with all school districts in Fort Dodge to ensure our youth are given the best opportunities for success.”

The Police Department is still seeking information on this case. Anyone with information is asked to call the police at 573-1424 or Webster County Crime Stoppers at 573-1444. Information can also be submitted by visiting www.wccrimestoppers.com or by texting LEC and the tip to CRIMES (274637).
