Dayton man pleads guilty to illegal gun possession

SIOUX CITY — A Dayton man faces up to 10 years in prison after he pled guilty Thursday in federal court to possession of firearms by a felon.

Christopher Johnson, 45, was convicted of the charge this week after entering his plea. His previous felony conviction from August 2001 in Boone County, manufacture of methamphetamine or possession with intent to manufacture, made his possession of a gun illegal.

The conviction this week stems from an incident in May 2017 when law enforcement was dispatched to a Dayton residence after reports of a suspicious person. Officers located Johnson at a barn nearby, at a residence where he was known to reside.

Officers seized two guns — a Ruger .22 caliber pistol and a Jimenez Arms .22 caliber pistol — along with ammunition from Johnson.

Johnson will be sentenced before United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand after a presentence report is completed. Johnson faces up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and up to three years supervised release following any imprisonment.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn S. Wehde after investigation by Dayton Police Department, the Webster County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
