Attempted murder suspect arrested

Gord charged in Rolfe stabbing

POCAHONTAS — A Rolfe man wanted for attempted murder was arrested Wednesday at about 10:45 p.m. in Dakota City.

The Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office relayed a tip to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office that Michael John Gord, 28, was staying at his grandmother’s house in the 500 block of Third Avenue South. There, Humboldt deputies arrested him without incident.

Chief Deputy Cory Lampe of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said deputies thought Gord would attempt to flee through the back door after they knocked.

“When he saw the house was surrounded, he gave up without incident,” Lampe said.

Gord was transferred to Pocahontas County Jail, where he is held on a $100,000 cash-only bond for attempted murder, three counts of willful injury causing serious injury and going armed with intent.

Gord’s criminal complaint reveals new details about the alleged attempted murder of a Rolfe man on Sunday evening.

The Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office said that Gord approached and assaulted another Rolfe man in the 100 block of Garfield Street, accusing the victim of stalking Gord’s wife and children. The defendant and victim, 36, previously knew each other.

As the victim drove past Gord’s house on Elm Street, he said Gord’s car’s headlights came on, and the car pulled up next to him.

Gord then exited his silver Hyundai and approached the outside of the victim’s vehicle, where the standing victim was stabbed by an 18-inch curved knife, according to the complaint.

A struggle ensued as the victim attempted to grab the arm he says Gord was stabbing him with and fought.

The victim sustained two large stab wounds on his right thigh and left buttock, each one about 2 inches long, the Pocahontas Sheriff’s Office said.

He was transported by ambulance to the Pocahontas Community Hospital and subsequently transferred to a Des Moines hospital for treatment of a severed artery in his left buttock.

Hospital staff advised Pocahontas deputies that the victim would have bled to death without treatment.
