Colorado man pleads guilty to assaulting U.S. Rep. King

SIOUX CITY — A Lafayette, Colorado man pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to one count of assaulting a member of Congress after throwing a cup of water on U.S. Rep. Steve King at Mineral City Mill & Grill.

Blake Gibbins, 27, admitted in a plea agreement Monday to approaching the table at the Fort Dodge restaurant, at 2621 Fifth Ave. S., where King was sitting on March 22. After confirming his identity, he admits to throwing a cup of water on King, splashing the congressman and a few others around him.

Gibbons faces a maximum sentence of not more than one year imprisonment, a $100,000 fine and up to five years of probation. Sentencing before Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Kelly Mahoney will take place after a presentence report.

Gibbins originally pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault and one count of disorderly conduct, both simple misdemeanors, in front of Webster County Magistrate Steve Kersten, represented by appointed attorney Jason Carlstrom.

Those charges in Iowa carry a maximum penalty of a $620 fine and 30 days in jail.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy Duax, the FBI, the Fort Dodge Police Department and the U.S. Capitol Police.
