Body found near Little Dam identified

The Fort Dodge Police Department has released the identity of the body found near the Little Dam on the Des Moines River on Saturday afternoon.

FDPD identified the individual as Michael Whitaker, 36, of Boone.

Whitaker was found in an area about 100 yards from the Little Dam around noon on Saturday.

Capt. Ryan Gruenberg, of the FDPD, said on Monday that “at this time, there is nothing suspicious in nature, no criminal activity is suspected.”

Dr. Dan Cole, Webster County medical examiner, was called to the scene and said there didn’t appear to be any foul play.

Whitaker’s body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Ankeny for an autopsy.

The Police Department will reassess once the autopsy results come in, and continue to investigate the circumstances around Whitaker’s death.

“We’ve talked to several people who knew the individual and had spoken to the individual before he was discovered and kind of developed a time line of where he had been prior to ending up where he did,” Gruenberg said.
