Gully found guilty of burglary

Sentencing set for Sept. 9

A Fort Dodge man who broke into a house and assaulted someone before leaving with stolen property, was found guilty by a Webster County jury on Wednesday, according to the Webster County attorney’s office.

Cornelius Gully, 31, was found guilty of first-degree burglary, a class B forcible felony.

He was convicted for his role in a violent home invasion and assault that happened in the 400 block of North 18th Street.

Gully broke into the residence, then assaulted the occupant by choking and hitting her. He then stole a cell phone before leaving the residence.

He was arrested within hours of the initial emergency call after returning to the victim’s residence.

When he was arrested, Gully was found to be in possession of a cell phone belonging to the victim.

The case was prosecuted by First Assistant Webster County Attorney Ryan Baldridge. It was investigated by the Fort Dodge Police Department.

“As with all cases, a successful prosecution would not have occurred in this case without the cooperation of those present during and impacted by this criminal act,” Baldridge said in a written statement. “The Webster County attorney’s office sincerely appreciates the cooperation it receives from members of our communities and law enforcement partners in the prosecution of criminal acts occurring within Webster County.”

Gully’s sentencing is set for Sept. 9.

Gully is a habitual offender and is facing an indeterminate sentence of 25 years, with a 17.5 year mandatory minimum period of incarceration.
