FD council moves to finance sewer work

Fort Dodge city leaders are moving to finance the next big portion of $80 million worth of needed sanitary sewer improvements.

The City Council on Monday unanimously passed the first resolution needed to borrow $16 million from a state low-interest loan fund.

That money will be used to pay for a new lift station to pump wastewater to the wastewater treatment plant. It will also be used to pay for hydraulic upgrades along 13th Avenue South and in the Duncombe Elemenatry School neighborhood.

Councilman Kin Alstott said an engineering study identified $80 million worth of needed sanitary sewer work. He said if nothing is done, that price tag would swell to $240 million.

Alstott said $30 million worth of work has already been done.

”It’s advantageous for us to keep on working,” he said.

In other business Monday, the council purchased a house at 312 N. Eighth St. from Loc Dinh Tran, of Rosemeade, California, for $22,800. The house will be demolished. It is one of several houses on North Eighth Street the city has purchased with plans to demolish them to make way for future development.

Also, the council bought a 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe for the Fire Department from Kemna Auto of Fort Dodge for $35,300. It will replace a 2001 Dodge Durango now in use.

The low bid of $28,893 came from Shimkat Motor Co., of Fort Dodge. However, it was set aside because the offered vehicle, a Dodge Durango Pursuit, is not a full-sized sport utility vehicle and did not meet specifications.

Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota offered a price of $37,224.
