Knigge pleads guilty to attempted murder

Mackenzie Knigge has pleaded guilty to attempted murder and two other charges in connection with the death of Jessica Gomez nearly two years ago.

At a plea hearing in Webster County District Court Thursday, Knigge admitted she was present in Clare on Aug. 5, 2017, when Phillip Williams put Gomez in a chokehold and that she helped Williams not only when he put Gomez in a chokehold, but also in “controlling” Gomez.

Knigge also pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree robbery and abuse of a human corpse.

Knigge and Williams were both originally charged with first-degree murder in Gomez’s death, but both later took plea agreements where they pleaded guilty to attempted murder.

Knigge was originally set to go on trial starting Monday in Story County following a change of venue ruling from the court.

Williams has already been sentenced. Knigge’s sentencing has been set for July 8.
