Webster City sees 129 graduate
WEBSTER CITY — Webster City High School added another crop of students to its list of graduates, as 129 members of the Class of 2019 received their diplomas in front of a packed house inside the WCHS gymnasium Sunday afternoon.
Following the entrance of the graduates, WCHS Principal Brent Jorth opened the ceremony by introducing Senior Class President Josh Casady to the stage. Casady welcomed the crowd and his fellow students in a short speech.
The Purple and Gold Singers, which featured several members of the senior class, sang “Blessed Be the Name of the Lord” under the direction of Andrew Wotherspoon prior to speeches by seniors Austin Lampman and Alex Hooker, who were chosen by their peers to give the addresses.
Lampman touched on the successes of the Class of 2019, both in and out of the classroom. In addition to the outstanding academic record, he lauded athletic highlights, as well as the choir, band and theatrical achievements.
Hooker, who will attend the U.S. Naval Academy, then took the stage and looked towards the future while infusing humor throughout.
Following another song by the senior members of the choir — “Seasons of Love,” the popular theme from the musical “Rent” — and a number from the concert band, Jorth recognized the Cessna 3.75 scholars from the class.
WCHS Associate Principal Pat Farley presented the class, while Superintendent Dr. Mandy Ross and school board President Beth Van Diest handed out the diplomas.
Members of the Class of 2019 tossed their caps into the air in celebration just prior to being dismissed from the gym. Family members and friends greeted them outside the gymnasium for hugs and photos.
