Two pickups were in the ditch at the southeast side of the intersection of 170th Street and Xavier Avenue Sunday afternoon following a fatal crash there.

VINCENT — One man was killed and two other people were injured when two pickups slammed into each other at a rural intersection in eastern Webster County Sunday afternoon, the Iowa State Patrol reported.

State Trooper Neil Morenz identified the dead man as Larry Dencklau, 72, of Eagle Grove.

Noah Telfer, 20, of Fort Dodge, was injured in the crash at 170th Street and Xavier Avenue. Morenz said he was initially treated at UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center and was then transferred to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Also injured was Nathan Telfer, 15, of Fort Dodge. He was treated at UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center and was released, according to Morenz.

The crash happened at 1:30 p.m.

Morenz said Dencklau was southbound on Xavier Avenue in a 2011 Dodge Ram, while Noah Telfer was operating a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on 170th Street. The two pickups collided in the uncontrolled intersection.

Both pickups went off the road into the ditch on the southeast side of the intersection. The Chevrolet rolled over and Noah Telfer was thrown from it, Morenz said. Nathan Telfer was a passenger in that truck.

Paramedics initially planned to have a helicopter airlift one of the injured people to a hospital, and a landing zone was set up on 170th Street. However, bad weather prevented the helicopter from flying, Morenz said.

Webster County sheriff’s deputies, Vincent firefighters, two ambulances from the Fort Dodge Fire Department, and a state Department of Natural Resources officer who was in the area responded to the crash along with state troopers.
