FDSH’s production ‘Big Fish’ wins awards

Cast to perform at Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase

The cast of the annual Fort Dodge Senior High musical, “Big Fish,” has been honored with numerous awards from the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards. The awards include: Outstanding Musical Production, Outstanding Ensemble, Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role by Collin Ellsbury, Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role by Olyvia Selby, and Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role by Kane Freeman.

These are the top awards possible for both the show and the individuals.

Ellsbury, Selby and Freeman will compete in the Triple Threat Program for the chance to represent Iowa at the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City this summer.

As part of the Outstanding Musical Production award, the FDSH cast will perform a three-minute medley from “Big Fish” as part of the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase on June 3.

Produced by Des Moines Performing Arts as the culmination of a year-long education initiative, the Showcase will be held at the Des Moines Civic Center at 7 p.m. on June 3. Marissa Smith, Joey Kelley and Alaina Porter will also represent FDSH by performing in a collaborative interschool medley led by a guest Broadway music director and choreographer.

“Mr. Drees and I are very excited for our students to have the chance to share their talent on the Civic Center Stage,” said Mary Jo Laupp, FDSH musical theatrical director. “We know Collin, Olyvia, and Kane will represent FDSH well and wish them the best of luck as they compete in the Triple Threat Program!”

Tickets for the Showcase are $15 each and are on sale at DMPA.org, the Civic Center Ticket Office and by phone at (515) 246-2300. The Awards Showcase will also be live-streamed at IPTV.org as part of a collaboration with Iowa Public Television. IPTV will also air a highlights special of the evening later this summer.
