When Morgan Border, 17, of Fort Dodge, was recently crowned Miss Hawkeye State Jr. Miss in the America’s U.S. Miss scholarship program, the title became an opportunity for her to contribute even more to her community and state.

Border has already done a great deal.

She founded the Stay Abreast breast cancer fundraiser as a 4-H service project when she was a 12- year-old sixth-grader.

It’s since raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer research and education.

Her title will allow her to expand her volunteer efforts.

“I think it’s exciting to have the opportunity to do even more volunteering,” she said.

The Stay Abreast work will help her in the national competition which is scheduled for July 18-21 in St. Louis, Missouri.

The judges look at the amount of volunteering and other philanthropic work the candidates do.

“I’m available to speak at schools, public events. To children and to teens. Anything anyone would like me for,” she said.

Border entered by submitting a photograph and resume in October. She was notified in December and received the crown and sash in January.

Both her time in 4-H and her work with Stay Abreast have helped her grow as a person.

“Everything I do has different areas,” she said. “4-H helps people, you’re doing community service. Stay Abreast has opened up more connections to help others. If you see a need, have the desire to do what you’re actually going to do.”

As a statewide winner, Border is looking to do work through the entire state, she said.

In her future, she’s looking at a nursing career, possibly as a flight nurse. She’s also interested in clothing design for people who have burns or other physical impairments that make it difficult for them to find attractive clothing that can be easily worn.

The national prize includes a college scholarship, crown, banner, trophy, modeling contract, photo shoot and being featured on national advertising.

The scholarship places emphasis on gaining self confidence, learning new modeling skills, and setting and achieving personal goals.

To contact Border for an appearance or to learn more about her work email stayabreast2014@gmail.com or call 570-3998. Stay Abreast also has a Facebook page with information.
