State Patrol: Ice caused fatal wreck

FD woman killed, 2 others injured

Icy road conditions led to a fiery fatal accident on a county road just outside of Fort Dodge Saturday evening.

Shelia Ross, 54, of Fort Dodge, was killed in the accident, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Two others, Laurie Mullen, 56, and Paul Ross, 63, also of Fort Dodge, were injured.

According to the Iowa State Patrol’s accident report, Paul Ross was driving a 2003 Jeep Liberty southbound on Webster County Road P59 when he crossed the center line because of icy road conditions.

The Jeep struck Mullen’s 2006 Nissan Murano, which was northbound on the same road.

The crash happened around 5:10 p.m. Saturday.

The collision sent the Ross vehicle into a ditch on the east side of the road, where it burst into flames. A column of black smoke blew over the road as firefighters worked to put out the blaze.

Mullen’s Nissan came to rest in the northbound lane, partially off the road. It did not catch fire.

Shelia Ross was pronounced dead at the scene, while Paul Ross and Mullen were transported to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

Firefighters from Otho and Fort Dodge used two hoselines to battle the gasoline-fueled fire in the sport utility vehicle.

“We had a lot of gasoline on the ground so we had to apply foam,” Fort Dodge Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter said.

Foam is a material that looks like soap suds, which extinguishes flammable liquid fires by depriving them of the oxygen they need to burn. Because of the severity of the fire, additional buckets of foam mixture had to be brought to the scene. Otho firefighters also responded with a tanker truck to supply more water.

A long stretch of Webster County Road P59 was still closed to traffic at about 9 p.m. Saturday.

Firefighters from Otho and Fort Dodge, Webster County sheriff’s deputies, Iowa State Patrol troopers and Webster County Deputy Medical Examiner Mark Gargano responded to the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing by the Iowa State Patrol.
