Snow (not) pocalypse

So much for the white stuff

We’re not entirely sure she can see out either, but Gracia McHone, 4, of Fort Dodge, was managing to stay warm Saturday while sledding at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park. The amount of snow that actually fell Friday and Saturday was far short of predictions, however the anticipated single-digit temperatures and wind chill proved accurate.

For Fort Dodge and Webster County residents who stocked up on milk, bread and frozen lasagna in anticipation of a major snowstorm Friday night and Saturday morning — they now have a lot of milk to drink and toast to eat.

What should have been between 3 to 7 or 8 inches of the white stuff fell closer to an inch.

Schools in the area, including all of those in Fort Dodge, were canceled Friday as were many local events in anticipation of the storm.

What the forecast did get right, though, were low temperatures and wind chills.

According to the Associated Press, Saturday night temperatures were expected to drop below zero overnight with wind chills that could go as low a -20 by this morning.

Aaron McHone, of Fort Dodge, zips down the sledding hill at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park Saturday afternoon with his well-bundled-up daughter, Gracia McHone, 4.

The temperatures did nothing, though, to deter Aaron McHone, of Fort Dodge, from taking his two children, Corban McHone, 9, and Gracia McHone, 4, to John F. Kennedy Memorial Park for some afternoon sledding on Saturday.

They bundled up and enjoyed the hill.

“We were probably some of the few who woke up and were a bit disappointed.” he said. “But, we were excited there was enough snow to do this.”

Other areas of Iowa did get plenty of snow. Cresco, near the Minnesota border, is reported to have received 13 inches. Reports from other parts of the state range from 1 to 6 inches.

The Associated Press also reported tow bans were still active in 40 Iowa counties Saturday along with the weather and wind advisories.

The cold temperatures are expected to last for most of next week with a possibility of snow today and Tuesday.
