The candidates have had their say for months, now it is time for the voters to weigh in.

The 2018 general election is Tuesday. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. A map and list of polling places appears on page 7A of today’s edition of The Messenger.

The statewide races to be decided include governor (Republican incumbent Kim Reynolds vs. Democrat Fred Hubbell), secretary of agriculture (Republican incumbent Mike Naig vs, Democrat Tim Gannon), secretary of state (Republican incumbent Paul Pate vs. Democrat Deidre DeJear) and auditor of state (Republican incumbent Mary Mosiman vs. Democrat Rob Sand).

In the Fourth Congressional District, which includes Webster County and all of its surrounding counties, Democrat J.D. Scholten is challenging U.S. Rep. Steve King, a Republican.

Area legislative races include the Senate District 5 contest pitting state Sen. Tim Kraayenbrink against Democratic challenger John O’Brien.

In perhaps the most closely watched area legislative race, Republican Ann Meyer and Democrat Megan Srinivas are seeking to replace state Rep. Helen Miller, D-Fort Dodge. Miller is retiring after 16 years in the Legislature. She represents House District 9, which includes Fort Dodge and northern Webster County.

In House District 10, state Rep. Mike Sexton, R-Rockwell City, is being challenged by Democrat Jake Thompson, also of Rockwell City. That House district includes Calhoun, Humboldt and Pocahontas counties plus western Webster County.

In House District 48, state Rep. Rob Bacon, R-Slater, faces Democrat Tim Winter, of Kelley. That district includes Hamilton County, southeastern Webster County, and parts of Boone and Story counties.

In Webster County, the voters will pick a new county treasurer to replace Jan Messerly, who is retiring after eight years in office and nearly 40 years in county government. The candidates to replace her are Democrat Brenda Angstrom, a longtime county employee, and Republican Kate Stucky, office manager of the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance.

Three people are seeking to represent District 4 on the Webster County Board of Supervisors. They are Republican incumbent Merrill Leffler, Democrat Niki Conrad and independent Eugene Newsome.
