Dewerff leaving local UnityPoint job for Des Moines

Thompson will step in as interim president and CEO

Mike Dewerff, president and chief executive officer of UnityPoint Health — Fort Dodge, has accepted a position to become the chief financial officer of UnityPoint Health — Des Moines.

The announcement was made Thursday by Deb Johnson, UnityPoint Health — Fort Dodge board chair.

The transition will become effective Sept. 17.

“I am grateful for my time in the Fort Dodge region,” Dewerff said in a written statement. “It has been a pleasure working with so many talented physicians, leaders and team members.”

He added, “They all have an incredible commitment to our patients and community.”

Dewerff, a native of Fargo, North Dakota, joined UnityPoint Health in Fort Dodge eight years ago before becoming CFO in 2015.

He replaced Sue Thompson as president and CEO in July 2015.

Thompson, who is the UnityPoint Health senior vice president of integration and optimization and CEO of UnityPoint Accountable Care, has agreed to serve as interim president and CEO.

Johnson said the search for Dewerff’s permanent replacement will begin immediately.

“The board is dedicated to identifying a new leader who will remain committed and focused on quality health care, exceptional patient experience and outstanding employee engagement,” Johnson said in a written statement.

Dewerff was the third person since the 1980s to lead Trinity Regional Medical Center and the related components of what has become UnityPoint Health — Fort Dodge.
