Prestage signs catering, laundry contracts

Huge pork processor to open in fall 2018

EAGLE GROVE — Laundry and food catering are two services that will be part of the Prestage Foods of Iowa pork processing plant when it opens in the fall of 2018.

Prestage announced recently that it reached agreements with United Vending and Food Services of North Sioux City, South Dakota, and CITY Laundry, of Oelwein.

According to Scott Wilcox, president of United Vending, about 30 local workers will be employed full time to service the plant.

That number is addition to the 1,050 people Prestage is expected to employ in its first year of operation.

Prestage reached an agreement with United Vending in February for the design and operation of a full-service cafeteria within the new plant, Terry Friesth, business analyst for Prestage, reported.

The kitchen and cafeteria in the new plant will occupy about 13,000 square feet, according to Friesth.

During peak break times, United Vending will serve more than 500 team members, she said.

“The required service level within our cafeteria must allow team members to be served and seated within three minutes so they are able to rest and enjoy their food,” Friesth said in a written statement. “United Vending showed us that they have the expertise to design a cafeteria that has ability to serve many in a short time, and an extensive menu that will be affordable.”

The daily menu will include hundreds of options. United Vending will also feature daily meal deals that offer a meal and drink for $4, according to Friesth.

The cafeteria design was created by Hassan El-Amoudi. It features varied seating arrangements, dual serving lines, and a restaurant/deli style environment, Friesth said.

Prestage also signed with CITY Laundry for uniform and laundry services.

First shift operations at the plant will reportedly use more than 900 frocks, thousands of gloves, and serve approximately 100 uniformed employees daily.

According to Friesth, the partnership with CITY will not directly increase jobs in the region.

“The CITY partnership will most likely not create jobs in the near region, but add workers to their existing operation in Oelwein,” Friesth said in an email. “They also hope to gain new business in this region, which could lead to the need for a depot and additional workers in this area.”

CITY Laundry is a multi-generational, family-owned company established in 1906.

Under the leadership of Colin Wetlaufer, president, and Chriss Carsello, sales manager, CITY has been expanding in Iowa, according to Friesth.

The addition of the contract with Prestage will expand its existing service area to northwest Iowa.
