Woman, 3 children recovering after car-train collision

Trooper: 'She just didn’t see the train’

A woman and three children are recovering after a car versus train collision southeast of Fort Dodge Saturday afternoon.

Traci Guthrie, of Fort Dodge, was driving southbound in an SUV when she collided with a train at a grade crossing, according to Trooper Neil Morenz, of the Iowa State Patrol.

The train was traveling eastbound.

Guthrie said that she ‘just didn’t see the train,’ Morenz reported.

The crossing is marked with railroad crossbucks and yield signs. It is not marked with electronic signals or crossing gates.

Canadian National Railroad crews had to split the train at the grade crossing to allow rescue workers access to the damaged SUV.

Guthrie has since been treated and released from the hospital, Morenz said.

Sitting in the passenger seat of the car next to Traci Guthrie was Colin Guthrie, 10.

He was airlifted to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines.

Colin Guthrie is in critical condition, but stable, Morenz reported.

Sitting in the backseat of the vehicle was Colton Guthrie, 8, and Colton Buckley, 7.

Colton Guthrie was transported to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center before later being airlifted to Blank Children’s Hospital.

Colton Guthrie is reportedly in stable condition, according to Morenz.

Buckley has been treated and released, Morenz said.

Crews from both Vincent and Fort Dodge fire departments, Fort Dodge police, the Webster County Sheriff’s Department, UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center and the Iowa State Patrol responded to the accident, which was reported at 3:24 p.m.
