Hailey Schwanz, then 9, of Girl Scout Troop 18, combines a chemical into a vial with her saliva to break down her skin cell walls and begin extracting DNA from the cells. She and about two dozen Girl Scouts extracted their DNA at an evening science class at Iowa Central Community College. Organizers hope the event sparks more girls’ interest in science.
