Deck the halls with holiday cheer

Fort Dodge, surrounding area have much to offer families this holiday season

Whether it’s music, lights, drama, or other holiday festivities you seek, Fort Dodge and the surrounding area have plenty to offer from now until Christmas. From the Lights at Kennedy to holiday concerts, this Christmas guide — though not all-inclusive — can help you and your family make holiday plans.

Music

Jive for Five with Jason Swedlund

A concert of Advent and Christmas Music featuring Jive for Five and organist Jason Swedlund is 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 239 N. 11th St. The event is free and open to the public thanks to the St. Olaf Lutheran Church Foundation.

Sounds of the Season at Iowa Central

The Iowa Central Community College Music Department presents Sounds of the Season holiday concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, and Friday, Dec. 5, in Decker Auditorium, Center for Performing Arts, on the ICCC campus. Admission is free.

FD Symphony’s ‘Under the Mistletoe’

The Fort Dodge Area Symphony presents “Under the Mistletoe” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Fort Dodge Middle School Auditorium, 800 N. 32nd St. Admission is by season membership or individual concert ticket for $15, available for purchase at the door. Students and children accompanied by an adult are always welcomed free of charge at symphony performances.

Christmas Cantata

The First Covenant Choir, a 40-member group of vocalists at First Covenant Church, 201 Ave. H., will present its Christmas Cantata, “There’s a New Star,” at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, and at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at the church. The First Covenant Praise Band will accompany the congregational carols as well as playing a Christmas arrangement. Doors open on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Jamie Aaron Kelley

HARCOURT –Jamie Aaron Kelley will present “A Celebration of Christmas” on his 4th annual Christmas tour at 7 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Lost Grove Community Center, 116 Larch St., Harcourt. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Lights

Lights at Kennedy

Lights at Kennedy is 6 to 9 p.m. beginning Friday, Dec. 5, and every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 21 at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park Campground, 1417 Nelson Ave. This is a drive-through light show featuring lights synchronized to music and displays from local businesses. Admission is by freewill donation.

A Lighted Christmas Parade

MANSON — A Lighted Christmas Parade will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 13 on Main Street in Manson.

Livermore Candy Cane Light Show

LIVERMORE — Livermore sixth annual Candy Cane Lane Light Show display will be lighted from 5 to 7 p.m. until the end of the year.

On Dec. 13, the Livermore American Legion Otto Field Post 415 will open its doors at 308 Fourth Ave., Livermore, as a warm waiting area for the Candy Cane Lane carriage riders. The American Legion Auxiliary Post 415 ladies will be serving hot chocolate and cookies that are being donated by the Humboldt Hy-Vee.

Candy Cane Lane lighted event is 5 to 7 p.m. with carriage rides through the Foth Candy Cane Lane to see all the lights. Freewill donations are accepted. If you would like to drive through on you own, follow the lighted signs to 605 Second Ave., Livermore.

Christmas Market

The Fort Museum Trading Post is hosting its Christmas Market from now until Dec. 23. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Fort Museum Trading Post, 1 Museum Road. For more information, call 515-573-4231 or email deb.davis@fortmuseumfv.com.

Kiwanis Christmasland

HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt-Dakota City Kiwanis Club is hosting Kiwanis Christmasland, 407 First Ave. S., directly south of Humboldt City Hall, now through Dec. 24. New video display boards, a children’s ornament tree and updated decorations are among the improvements for 2025. The self-guided tour concludes with a visit from Santa Claus and a candy cane. Hours are Friday and Saturday evenings, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday afternoons, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. From Dec. 20-23, Christmasland will be open twice daily, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Christmasland will be open a final time on Dec. 24 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. For more information or to schedule a group tour, call Karen Sorensen at (515) 890-0864. The attraction is free to the public.

Festival of Trees

WEBSTER CITY — The Jane Young House, 629 Elm St., Webster City, will be open from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, for tours of the home’s Festival of Trees for a freewill donation. Wine and cheese will be served Friday night. The event is sponsored by the Webster City Women’s Club. The home is handicap accessible.

Holiday Open House

Blanden Memorial Art Museum, 920 Third Ave. S., is holding its Holiday Open House from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. There will be art, music and community. Jacob Pedersen will perform at 5 p.m., with Amy Champagne performing at 6 p.m.

Drama

‘A Fairy Tale Christmas Carol’

Hawkeye Community Theatre presents “A Fairy Tale Christmas Carol” at 7 p.m. Dec. 3 through 6 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 6. Tickets are $10 and are available online or at the door.
