Festival celebrates traditional dance, music

28th annual Midwest Polka Fest is Friday through Sunday

HUMBOLDT – Guests will be able to show off their best dance moves during this year’s 28th annual Midwest Polka Fest to be held over Labor Day weekend at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds.

The festival will bring five different bands to provide live music while the guests polka, foxtrot, and waltz their way across two wooden dance floors.

The bands will perform everything from German style polka and Czech music to big band numbers, Dixieland tunes, party anthems and country singles.

It will cost $40 for a weekend pass or it will be $12 per day to attend the Midwest Polka Fest.

Longtime musical alumni of the festival will return, including Top Notchmen from Wisconsin; Karl & the Country Dutchmen from Wisconsin; Julie Lee & Her White Rose Band from North Dakota; Malek’s Fishermen from Garner; and new to the festival this year is Matt Hodek & the Dakota Dutchmen, from North Dakota.

The Top Notchmen will open the event on Friday, playing from 2 to 4 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. Alternating with them onstage will be Karl and the Country Dutchmen who will play from 4 to 6 p.m. and 8 to 10 p.m.

Starting the day off on Saturday will be Karl and the Country Dutchmen on stage one from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

They are followed by the Top Notchmen from 2 to 4 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. Alternating with the Top Notchmen is Matt Hodek’s Dakota Dutchmen at 4 to 6 p.m. and at 8 to10 p.m.

On stage two, Malek’s Fishermen will play from noon to 2 p.m. and from 4 to 6 p.m. Also performing on stage two will be Julie Lee & Her White Rose Band at 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m.

On the last day, Sept. 3, the music and dancing continues on both floors.

The Top Notchmen will play from noon to 2 p.m. and from 4 to 6 p.m. Alternating with them again on stage one will be Matt Hodek & the Dakota Dutchmen from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

On stage two, Julie Lee & Her White Rose Band will play from noon to 2 p.m. and again at 4 to 6 p.m.

Additionally, there will be a Polka Mass conducted by Julie Lee beginning at 10 a.m. Also on Sunday morning, the Lions Club will be providing breakfast from 8 to 11:30 a.m.

Camping sites at the fairgrounds will be available for $12 per day with Sept. 4 being free. Electrical sites will be available until filled.

There will be food stands open all three days. No food or drink is to be brought in.
