Shag the Drag event to raise funds for local Meals on Wheels

FD event is Saturday, registration is online

If you are a Fort Dodge native, you might have your own definition of what ‘shag the drag’ means: driving down Central Avenue, windows down, singing along with the radio with friends.

It’s time to bring it back, in a new way with a run and walk event on Saturday to benefit Meals on Wheels.

“Luke and I were both born and raised in Fort Dodge,” said Jenn Becker, a co-creator of the new Shag the Drag event. “We love seeing our community grow and we wanted to add to the great events it has to offer. We thought this run would be a fun way to allow people to enjoy the sights of downtown and the river; and for some, a chance to relive the glory days of the infamous “Shag the drag” tradition down Central Avenue.”

For the three mile walk, participants will head north on 12th Street towards Daniel Pharmacy, leading everyone to Shag the Drag for two blocks down Central Avenue, then take a jog over to First Avenue South, and cutting back over to Central Avenue by the First Avenue South roundabout. The run doesn’t end there, participants will then zig zag south down to the former Sunkissed Meadows Golf Course and enjoy the beautiful trail along the river. The last stretch of the run will be heading north on Seventh Street .

The run will end back on Central Avenue, where you can continue shagging the drag. After completing the run or walk, enjoy the music, food, and fun of Market on Central.

The one mile walk will begin the same as the run, but rather than cutting over to First Avenue South, walkers can keep shagging the drag right through Market on Central, down to the library and back.

After completing the walk or run, be sure to stick around to enjoy the music, food, and fun of Market on Central.

The new version of Shag the Drag will be held on Saturday. The three mile run/walk will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the one-mile walk will begin at 8:45 a.m. Each route will start on the grounds of the Ringland- Smeltzer House, 1019 Second Ave. S.

Registration cost $5 and will benefit the local Meals on Wheels. To register, visit the website https://sites.google.com/view/shaggingthedrag2017/registration

“Since Meals on Wheels is currently being re-instated in our community, it was a perfect opportunity to support a cause in need,” Becker said. ”We hope for lots of community participation for our first year.”
