King Band summer concert series continues

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church to host ice cream social before concert tonight

Dan Cassady, at left, the former Director of Bands at St. Edmond, sat in for a few minutes during a Karl King Honor Band at St. Edmond Catholic School to prank his friend Kathy Yoakam, of Humboldt, who was directing the group. Alex Tiernan, 11, reacts to his prank, center. Cassady will be the featured soloist at tonight’s show.

The Sunday concerts by the Karl L. King Muncipal Band are set to continue at 7:30 p.m. today at the Oleson Park Bandshell.

The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Bell Choir will again be holding a homemade ice cream social before the concert beginning around 6:30 p.m.

Conductor Jerrold P. Jimmerson, along with Assistant Conductor David Klee, have once again put together an interesting and entertaining evening of band music.

The music of the band’s namesake, Karl L. King, always appears in each concert, and tonight will be no exception.

During the hour-long concert, the band will perform one of King’s marches, ”The Gateway City,” his ragtime selection, ”Mournful Maggie,” his circus aerial waltz, ”Vision of Cleopatra,” and his galop, ”Royal Hippodrome.”

Other marches include the modern concert march, ”Bandology” by Eric Osterling, John Philip Sousa’s ”The Thunderer,” along with the circus march, ”Symphonia,” by Merle Evans.

The evening’s classical offering will be Friedrich von Flotow’s romantic overture to the opera ”Stradella.” Set in Venice and the countryside near Rome it is loosely based on the colorful life of the 17th-century Italian composer and singer . It was first performed in its full version in December 1844 in Hamburg, Germany.

A lighter selection by the band will be a medley of highlights from the popular Broadway musical ”Show Boat.” This iconic musical, with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein and music by Jerome Kern, debuted 90 years ago in 1927. It includes many hit songs of the day, including the unforgettable “Ol’ Man River.”

Special guest soloist will be Dan Cassady, a regular member of the Karl L. King Municipal Band and a frequent trombone soloist.

Cassady will perform a jazz-styled song, ”Reflective Mood,” and then a medley of Tommy Dorsey’s big-band hits, titled “T.D. – That Sentimental Gentleman.” Cassady is a retired music educator who currently lives at Twin Lakes. Previously he taught music and directed band programs at Fort Dodge Senior High School, Iowa Central Community College, and St. Edmond High School, and currently performs as trombonist with Jive For Five.

Closing the concert will be the playing of our national anthem.

Guests should bring lawn chairs or blankets because no seating is available.

These summer band concerts will continue each Sunday evening during the month of July.
