King Band features nationally known conductor

The Karl L. King Municipal Band will feature a variety of marches, classical works, and popular selections during its hourlong concert at 7:30 p.m. today at the Oleson Park Bandshell. Marches will include “The University of Chicago” and “The Melody Shop,” both by Karl L. King, along with Russell Alexander’s exciting circus march, “The Southerner.”

These classical selections include Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini’s 1831 overture, “Norma,” along with German composer Richard Wagner’s thrilling “Tannhauser March,” from his opera “Tannhauser,” written in 1845.

Members of the cornet section will be featured on a catchy ragtime selection, written in 1906 by Adeline Shepherd, titled “Pickles and Peppers (and Cornets).”

On the lighter side will be highlights from the popular Broadway musical, “An American in Paris.” This musical premiered in 1928, and Gershwin considered his composition to be “a rhapsodic ballet.” This musical is currently playing at the Civic Center in Des Moines. Also on the program will be an arrangement of the Beatles’ classic, “Michelle,” along with Karl King’s exciting galop “The Whippet Race.”

Special guest conductor will be Andrew Glover, nationally prominent composer, conductor, and arranger.

Glover’s diverse career in music has included successful tenures as educator, composer-arranger, performer, conductor, and publisher.

He joined the staff of the C.L. Barnhouse Co. in Oskaloosa in 1998, as currently serves as executive vice president in charge of music production, serves as staff composer-arranger and editor, and manages the business as chief operating officer.

A native of the St. Louis area, he was educated in the public schools of Webster Groves, Missouri. He received his bachelor of music education degree from Central Methodist University and did graduate work at Southeast Missouri State University.

As a sophomore in high school, Glover’s first band arrangement was performed by the school’s wind ensemble, and thus began a multi-decade career in composition and arranging. His band works now number more than 200, many of which are published by Barnhouse, and have been performed, recorded and broadcast by bands worldwide.

Glover will conduct Karl King’s march, “Forest City Commandery,” along with premiering his newest composition, “Songs from the Great War.” This medley includes several songs that were popular during World War I, on the 100th anniversary of that event.

The concert will be held at the bandshell in Oleson Park. Admission is free, courtesy of the city of Fort Dodge. Jerrold P. Jimmerson is the band’s conductor and Dr. David Klee is the assistant conductor.

There will be an ice cream social, starting around 6:30 p.m., provided by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Bell Choir before the regular concert starts at 7:30 pm.

Persons are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs or a blanket, since there is no seating provided.
