Making Valentine’s Day plans

Roses, candies, cards and fine dining experiences are often planned as expressions of love during Valentine’s Day.

However, more unique options exist for sharing the evening with someone special. And, many of them benefit a school or nonprofit in the community.

Feeling love in the vineyard

Two special events will be held at Soldier Creek Winery during Valentine’s Day weekend.

On Saturday, from 6 to 8 p.m., the second annual “Vine”yl Dance Party will be staged at the winery. Special guest DJ Bob Wood will spin hits on vinyl records while party-goers dance, eat a few treats and drink a glass or two of wine.

People are encouraged to bring their favorite records to have played on the turntables. Admission is free and food will be available for purchase.

Then on Feb. 14, “Chocolate, Wine and Valentines” will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. in the tasting room at Soldier Creek.

The afternoon will offer a variety of chocolates and treats to sample, along with red fruits, dipping sauces and a chocolate fountain. Romantic music and dancing will be encouraged.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Almost Home and the North Central Iowa Humane Society. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the winery, 1584 Paragon Ave., or at the animal shelter, 725 S. 32nd St.

Enjoying a Victorian atmosphere

A Victorian Valentine’s Day dinner is planned for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Vincent House, 824 Third Ave. S.

A four-course meal will be served and pianist Jean Stanley will perform love-themed songs. Tickets are $25 per person and they are available at the YWCA or by calling Terry at 573-3931, ext. 207. Tickets must be purchased in advance by Friday (Feb.12).

The evening is organized by the Friends of the Vincent House.

Proceeds from the dinner will benefit the 143-year old mansion and be put toward maintenance and other upkeep costs.

Built in 1872, the Vincent House is an example of the Second Empire style characterized by the mansard roof and tall, narrow windows. It was often the center of social life in the 1800s and early 1900s.

Located in the historic Oak Park District, the Vincent House was left to the YWCA and is now available for rent for events and special occasions.
