Choral Society to perform

Fort Dodge Choral Society will open its new season with two performances of “The Amazing World.” The choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1000 Willson Ave., Webster City; and at 3 p.m. Oct. 27 at Grace Lutheran Church, 211 S. Ninth St..

Admission is $10 for adults or season membership, and students are admitted free.

A highlight of the concert is the world premiere of Robert Cohen’s “God’s Whisper.” The choir has previously performed Cohen’s “Alzheimer’s Stories” and “Sing with Me.”

Other works include Eric Whitacre’s “Animal Crackers,” Ivor Davies’ “Prayers from the Ark,” and Randall Thompson’s “Frostiana.”

Cohen has written music for orchestra, chamber ensemble, dance and theater. He has been the recipient of many awards and commissions, including a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship, an American Music Center Grant, a Meet the Composer Award and several grants from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and was the selected winner of the 2008 N.Y. Composer’s Circle Award. In addition, Cohen co-authored the book and composed the score for the 2000 Richard Rodgers Award winning Off-Broadway musical “Suburb.”
