FD council adds vehicles to city fleet

An ambulance, a bucket truck to be used by the city electrician and a pickup were added to the Fort Dodge fleet of vehicles Monday night.

The ambulance was purchased from Ed M. Feld Equipment Co., of Carroll, for $126,423. It will be smaller than the Fire Department’s current ambulances and will be used for long distance transportation of patients.

In a report to the council, Fire Chief Steve Hergenreter wrote that in 2019, city ambulances traveled about 270,000 miles to hospitals in Des Moines, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Buying the new ambulance will provide a more fuel-efficient vehicle for those trips, he wrote.

The electrician’s truck will have a boom that will extend 47 feet in the air so that street lights and traffic signals can be repaired. It will cost $159,937. The price includes $51,259 to Fort Dodge Ford Linclon Toyota for the chassis and $108,678 to ABM Equipment and Supply, of Hopkins, Minnesota, for the utility body and boom.

The new truck will replace a 2003 Ford now in use.

Also, a half-ton Ford pickup with extended cab was purchased from Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota for $29,447. It will replace a 2005 Ford now in use.

The City Council voted unanimously to approve the purchases.
