DES MOINES — Several Messengerland athletes will hit the famed blue oval of Drake Stadium this week to compete at the Drake Relays.

Action started on Saturday and picks back up Tuesday with the Grand Blue Mile. College and open events begin on Wednesday with high school hitting the track Thursday evening.

Fort Dodge’s Tyler Schreier qualified in the 100-meter dash along with the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relays. St. Edmond’s 4×100 relay also advanced.

South Central Calhoun will have six events on the boys side, with Humboldt qualifying four and Algona five.

The Dodger 4×200 posted the fourth-best time of the season when they won the Blue Oval Invitational held right here last weekend at 1:30.31. That quartet included Schreier, Asle Thorson, Brycen Bell and Tysen Kershaw.

Fort Dodge’s 4×100 clocked the eighth-best time of the season with Schreier, Kershaw, Dayson Clayton and Bell going 43.26, which is less than a second behind state-leader Waukee.

Bawden, a returning state medalist, clocked the third-fastest 100 time last week at 10.78. Sioux City East’s Ardell Inlay (10.74) and Urbandale’s Harrison Waylee (10.75) are just ahead of the Bulldog junior.

Algona’s distance medley featuring Bawden, Skyler Groen, fellow 100-meter qualifier Wyatt Wegener and 1600-meter run qualifier Trey Engen are seeded fifth at 3:34.12, just four seconds behind Ames’ top time. South Central Calhoun is ninth in the event.

Chase McAlister in the 800 and Spencer Moon in the 1600 are both ranked seventh in their respective events for the Titans.

Bishop Garrigan’s TJ Schnurr advanced in the shot put along with Southeast Webster and Webster City’s 4×100 relays.

Kiersten Fisher of Southeast Valley secured qualifying spots in both the 100 hurdles and high jump, with Pocahontas Area’s Kaylee Shivers joining her in the field event.

Humboldt’s Kendal Clark (discus), West Bend-Mallard’s Rachel Fehr (400), Emmetsburg’s Molly Schany (discus) and the Algona 4×100 all qualified.

Clark is 11th in her event with a throw of 131-3.5 earlier this month.
